Gaddafi's family owned property everywhere around the world. Today this property quickly changes owners. One of the last examples is confiscation of the hotel in Italy on the island of Pantelleria, purchased earlier by the Gaddafi clan.
The hotel, or rather huge hotel complex and a few hectares of land on a small island near the coast of Sicily, is estimated at 20 million Euros. Before the death Muammar Gaddafi had planned to create a resort on Pantelleria for his family members and important guests.
Seizure of Gaddafi’s hotel property was authorized by the court of Rome as part of the case on seizure of Gadhafi’s assets, whose fortune in Italy is estimated at 1.1 billion Euros.
The court in Rome has decided to seize the hotel under request of the International Criminal Court in the Hague, which is currently trying to find a way to extradite Gaddafi's son Saif Al-Islam for the crimes against humanity.
Seizure of Gaddafi’s assets in Italy has been lasting for several months. In March 2012 Italian authorities confiscated Gaddafi’s share in one of the largest banks of the country – Unicredit and Italian energy concern Eni. Previously were also confiscated Gaddafi’s shares in Fiat and defense concern Finmeccanica. Another notable seizure is the share in the "Juventus" football club owned by another Gaddafi’s son Saadi.
Before the beginning of military operation in Libya Gaddafi had close ties with the Italian government. At one time he personally hosted the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. After joining of Italy to the NATO operation in Libya Gaddafi’s assets for 3.6 billion Euros were frozen.
