Alezio: Messapian History, Cuisine and Beaches
Messapian Traces and Sacred Architecture
Alezio combines Messapian archaeology, religious buildings, regional culinary traditions and lively events. The Chiesa della Madonna Addolorata has a Greek-cross floor plan and stands on the foundations of a 12th-century building. The Santuario di Santa Maria della Lizza in Alezio is dedicated to the patron saint Santa Maria della Lizza and was built between the 12th and 13th centuries.
The sanctuary includes an underground cemetery with ten cells. It was uncovered after the floor collapsed in the 1960s. The religious building therefore offers insight not only into the town’s religious history, but also into an architectural past beneath today’s ground level.
Museum and Archaeological Heritage
The Museo Civico Messapico di Alezio was founded in 1982 following archaeological excavations in the Messapian necropolis. It is housed in the Palazzo Tafuri, an approximately octagonal 18th-century palace. The collection includes epigraphic documentation and gold jewellery from the 1st century BC.
The Parco Archeologico Messapico contains 18 Messapian tombs arranged individually or in small groups. The monumental tomb consists of 20 slabs of local tuff. Together with the museum, it provides an informative introduction to the archaeological traces that shape Alezio.
Agriculture and Locally Rooted Cuisine
The Masseria Didattica Trappito Stracca consists of a 17th-century building above a subterranean 14th-century oil mill. Its cooking school teaches the preparation of wheat bread, pucce, frise, orecchiette and minchiareddri. Locally milled grain and a wood-fired oven are used. The Masseria Didattica Trappito Stracca is open to schools and rural tourism.
The area’s connection with wine and agriculture also extends beyond the individual town: the production area of Alezio DOP covers the municipalities of Alezio and Sannicola, as well as parts of the municipalities of Gallipoli and Tuglie in the Province of Lecce.
Festivals and Fixed Dates
The Festa e Fiera di San Rocco includes a procession through the streets of Alezio, during which the statue of the saint is carried. The event is scheduled from 20 October 2024 to 20 October 2035, on a twelve-month cycle. It is therefore one of the town’s clearly dated cultural events.
The Alezio Estate 2026 programme includes guided tours of Alezio’s historic centre on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm. These include the Santuario di Santa Maria della Lizza, the Museo Civico Messapico and the archaeological park. Free tours of the archaeological excavations in the Messapian necropolis are also scheduled from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. On Thursdays at 7:00 pm, the programme includes fitness activities in Parco don Tonino Bello led by qualified instructors.
