Discover Carmiano

Carmiano combines sacred architecture, historic buildings and the landscape of Valle della Cupa. In Carmiano and its surroundings, there are churches with art-historical details and palazzi bearing medieval and later traces; traditional festivals and beaches in the wider regional area add to these attractions.

Churches and architectural details

The Chiesa dell'Immacolata stands outside the center of Carmiano on the road to Villa Convento. Its façade features a portal surrounded by bands and rosettes, as well as two frescoed niches. The central altar is traditionally attributed to the workshop of Giuseppe Zimbalo.

Maria SS. Assunta is the present-day parish church. It was completed in 1961 and consecrated on June 10, 1961. Its oldest surviving bell bears the year 1560.

The chapel of Maria Ss.ma del Monte Carmelo stands on Carmiano's main road, today's Via Roma. It was built around 1860. In the Palazzo dei Celestini, the oldest section dates from the first half of the 14th century. There is also a chapel dedicated to San Donato, with an altar decorated with stucco and polychrome marble. A monumental entrance portal in Carmiano displays a Catalan-Durazzesque style; the flanking niches contain stone statues of virtues attributed to Giuseppe Zimbalo. The construction dates differ: the chapel was built around 1860, while the oldest section of the Palazzo dei Celestini dates from the first half of the 14th century.

Palazzi and historical points of interest

In the area around Carmiano are the Castello Angioino di Copertino, Palazzo Morelli, Palazzo Turrisi-Palumbo and Palazzo Tresca.

The monumental fountain also bears the local name “la funtana rande”. It was first completed in 1922 and was then called “La fontana del Sele”.

Valle della Cupa and the regional landscape

Carmiano and the hamlet of Magliano lie in Valle della Cupa, a karst depression in the Lecce hinterland.

In the wider regional area around Carmiano are the beaches Spiaggia Porto Cesareo, Spiaggia Solemarebarocco, Spiaggia Le Dune and Spiaggia Scala di Furno. Valle della Cupa lies in the Lecce hinterland; the four beaches, by contrast, belong to the wider regional area around Carmiano.

Festivals throughout the year

Since the middle of the 19th century, the people of Carmiano have honored Our Lady of Mount Carmel with prayers and a festival on July 16, the liturgical feast day. Another date is the Festa di San Vito, held in honor of the co-patron San Vito Martire. It is scheduled for the fourth Sunday in October and the following Monday. For annual planning in Carmiano, the festivals take place in different seasons: the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is on July 16, while San Vito is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in October and the following Monday.
