Discover Carpignano Salentino

Carpignano Salentino combines unusual cultural evidence with wine, music and beaches in the surrounding area. In the town and its surroundings, you will encounter an early medieval crypt, Byzantine frescoes, menhirs, historic towers and archaeological sites. This makes the area particularly interesting for travellers who do not want to focus their stay on just one excursion destination, but instead want to combine history, local traditions and the landscape.

The Santa Cristina Crypt

The Cripta della Madonna delle Grazie is also known as Santa Cristina. It was built between the 9th and 11th centuries and is the oldest church in Carpignano Salentino. The Byzantine frescoes are particularly distinctive: Teofilatto created them in 959, Eustazio in 1020; further frescoes dating from around 1050 are attributed to Costantino. The Santa Cristina Crypt is entered via two stairways. One leads to the actual church crypt, while the other leads to a separate atrium for catechumens. This atrium was also formerly used for burials. The architectural layout and the different periods of the frescoes make the crypt a concentrated destination for anyone interested in sacred architecture and the long history of Salento.

Menhirs, Dolmens and Historic Towers

The area’s remarkable density of historic evidence is also apparent beyond the crypt. Menhir Grassi is a megalithic monument on the provincial road to Melendugno, in the Grassi district. Menhir Staurotomea stands on Via di Pasulo at a junction towards the Masserie Chiatto and Schimbordi. Its Greek name means “Great Cross”. The Chianca Santo Stefano trilith consists of three stone slabs in the form of a gate and is more reminiscent of the megaliths of Northern Europe than of the other dolmens of Salento.

On the outskirts of Carpignano Salentino, in the Cacorzo area, stands the Torre Colombaia detta Palumbaru. The building dates from the period between the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The tower is 12 metres high and has a circumference of 62 metres. The complex includes another square tower; both towers contain thousands of nesting cells for pigeons. Near Cacorzo there are also underground neviere, located around three to four metres deep and partly featuring a barrel vault. They were used to store snow.

Virtual Exploration and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The virtual museum of the municipality of Carpignano Salentino enables visitors to explore ten architectural monuments in three dimensions. It includes historical descriptions, photographs, videos with laser reconstructions and a 360-degree virtual tour. This allows you to view individual buildings in context in advance and select your interests more precisely for a stay.

The area around Carpignano Salentino is also home to Palazzo Baronale, a castle, Scavi Archeologici Apigliano, an archaeological site, the Museo di Storia Naturale del Salento and Palazzo Granafei, also a castle. These varied destinations complement the local sites with archaeological, natural-history and fortified historic locations.

Beaches and Regional Atmosphere

For a trip planned around changing points of focus, the beaches of Spiaggia Alimini, Spiaggia della Punticeddha, San Giorgio and Frassanito are located in the area around Carpignano Salentino. The names represent four possible coastal destinations that you can consider alongside the cultural sites without losing sight of the town’s historical focus.

The Festa te lu mieru, a folk festival in Carpignano Salentino, is part of the local character. It is dedicated to wine as well as the music and dance typical of Salento, including the taranta. In this way, Carpignano Salentino combines architectural history with a vibrant cultural tradition.
