Corsano: Hiking Trails, Cliffs and Local Culture

Corsano can be explored through three themes: hiking trails, coastal landscape and religious buildings. From the Serra to the sea, paths lead through the town and its surroundings, while churches, chapels and local festivals add different historical and cultural accents.

Hiking between the Serra and the Sea

A dense network of hiking trails crosses Corsano and descends from the Serra to the sea. The Sentiero della Vecchia Ferrovia runs through Corsano. The former disused railway line has been transformed into a path through the Mediterranean maquis, with bridges and tunnels offering panoramic views. The Anello delle Vie del Sale also passes through Corsano. The nature trail of the Vie del Sale begins after the Cappella di Santa Maura and ends at the Torre Specchia Grande. For hikers, the two references to Corsano are also practical landmarks.

Coast and Landscape

Walkers, cyclists and families meet at the Cappella di Santa Maura almost every day. The coastal area of Corsano includes a rugged cliff coast with Mediterranean maquis, holm oaks and stone pines. In addition to the maquis, the rugged cliff coast also features holm oaks and stone pines, so rocks and Mediterranean vegetation define the same coastal area.

Churches, Chapels and Historic Places

The Chiesa di Santa Sofia dates back to the late Byzantine period and originally had the floor plan of a Greek cross. It is currently closed to the public because urgent restoration work is required on the foundations, which rest on a layer of sand.

The Cappella di San Bartolo was built in 1714. Inside are a recently restored painting and a statue of the saint to whom the chapel is dedicated. The Congrega dell'Immacolata probably dates from the second half of the 18th century.

The Chiesa di San Biagio gives its name to the square where it stands. The Palazzo Feudale Capece includes a hanging garden and a citrus grove.

Festivals and Local Memory

In Corsano, Saint Maura is celebrated every year on May 1 with a Mass and a festival in a rocky landscape. The Sagra Agreste is associated with August and Corsano's Zona Pozze. The Carnival of Corsano and Capo di Leuca is associated with February or March in Corsano; this period comes before the feast of Saint Maura on May 1.

The nickname “carcagni tosti” given to the inhabitants of Corsano is associated with the former practice of walking barefoot over the rocks of natural salt pans. The historical and cultural tour leads to the equipped picnic area in the Zona Pozze.
