Cutrofiano – Ceramics, Crypts and Cultural Programs

Cutrofiano brings together ceramic craftsmanship, sacred sites carved into the rock, geological traces and a seasonal cultural calendar.

Ceramics as a cultural tradition

Ceramic craftsmanship in Cutrofiano has been documented since the Middle Ages and continues to be practiced without interruption to this day. Under Law No. 188/90, Cutrofiano is one of the areas with recognized ceramic production; the Consiglio Nazionale Ceramico gave its positive approval on December 15, 2022. The Museo della Ceramica di Cutrofiano offers themed visits, accessible educational workshops and tours that connect the museum with the town. The offerings therefore focus both on ceramics and on Cutrofiano itself.

Churches, crypts and kilns

The San Giovanni Battista crypt is entirely carved into the rock and can be accessed via a series of steps carved into the stone. The Church of San Giovanni Battista was built in the 17th century on the site of an earlier church that collapsed in 1607. The present church and its older predecessor, which collapsed in 1607, thus mark two construction phases at the same sacred site. The crypt in the Località San Giovanni Piscopìo has an approximately circular floor plan and a central column supporting its vault. Traces on the jamb sections of the entrance indicate that its interior walls were originally decorated with frescoes.

The central column is not merely a floor-plan detail; it supports the vault of the space. The Fornace romana in Contrada Scacciato is also circular and carved into the rock. The wood-fired kiln “Fornace a legna Colì” on Via Roma probably dates from the early 20th century or even the 19th century. In Cutrofiano, the circular form appears both in the crypt and in the Roman Fornace.

Geological traces in the Parco dei Fossili

The Parco dei Fossili displays geological layers with well-preserved fossils. Along the path, signs explain the geological time period of each layer.

Summer dates and local events

From July to September, the municipality of Cutrofiano organizes Sere d'Estate 2026 for residents and visitors. The summer program includes culture, music, theater, folk traditions, workshops, festivals, exhibitions and food events. For a stay during a fixed period, the dated festival events should therefore be clearly distinguished in terms of timing from the longer summer program.

The Li-Ucci program 2026 is scheduled from August 30 to September 5; the special event AssaggiUcci on Sunday, September 13, 2026, is also part of it. The Li Ucci Festival also includes a bicycle tour on Sunday, August 30, 2026, with tastings and cultural or musical stops along the route.

Arriving by bus

The Salento in Bus 2026 timetable lists route 102, operated by STP, between Maglie and Gallipoli; Cutrofiano is connected by a stop at Via Emanuele Filiberto 15.
