Galatone reveals its character particularly impressively through the combination of sacred art, historic buildings, archaeology and regional food culture. Anyone interested in the history of a place will find tangible traces here from several periods.

Historic churches with artistic details

The Chiesa Madre is also known as the Collegiata dell'Assunta and was built from 1591 to 1595 on the ruins of an earlier church. Its interior is shaped like a Latin cross. Four chapels are located on each side of the nave, with two more in the transept. The historic archive of the Chiesa Madre preserves three Greek codices. This means that the Chiesa Madre offers both architectural and palaeographic points of interest for your tour of Galatone.

The Baroque Chiesa del Crocifisso was built between 1683 and 1694. Craftsmen from throughout Salento were involved in its construction, with Giuseppe Zimbalo playing a prominent role. The paintings tell of the miracles of the Crocifisso della Pietà.

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano e San Rocco also combines architectural history with art. It stands next to the Dominican monastery and was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1712. Inside, there is a Madonna del Rosario by Donato Antonio D'Orlando.

City gate, palazzo and early settlement traces

The Porta di San Sebastiano was built around 1500 as part of Galatone's Aragonese city walls. It is the only surviving gate of Galatone's three monumental city gates and two gates used for military purposes. The Palazzo marchesale Belmonte-Pignatelli had already been the seat of Galatone's feudal lords from the 16th century onwards and was commissioned by the Squarciafico family. The portal and elegant windows with floral motifs and mascarons have been preserved.

With the Grotta Cappuccini settlement, Galatone's history reaches even further back. The settlement is an archaeological site dating from the Copper Age to the beginning of the Bronze Age. This time span makes the site particularly interesting if you would like to include early traces of human settlement in your travel plans alongside churches and Baroque architecture.

A fruit as part of the local character

Albicocca di Galatone is a traditional fruit and is promoted as a Slow Food Presidio. Its flesh is sweet and has medium acidity. It is harvested in May and June.
