Lizzanello: Churches, History and Olive-Growing Culture
Historic Buildings in Lizzanello
Lizzanello reveals its history through a variety of architectural forms. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Nuovo was built in the 16th century. The Palazzo baronale Paladini dates from the 15th century and was originally built as a castle. Both buildings provide access to the town’s historical layers – from ecclesiastical architecture to its former fortifications.
Chiesa di San Lorenzo Nuovo
The terraces of the Chiesa di San Lorenzo Nuovo were equipped with loopholes and openings for dropping projectiles, giving the building a fortified function. Inside, the church contains six side altars. The structure thus combines a defensive exterior with a richly differentiated interior.
Palazzo baronale Paladini
In the 17th century, Giovanni Paladini transformed the Palazzo baronale Paladini into an aristocratic residence. At the rear of the palazzo, a Lecce stone tower from the original structure has been preserved.
Chapels with Their Own History
The Cappella dell’Immacolata dates from the early years of the 17th century. In the 18th century, it was enlarged at the instigation of the Confraternita dell’Immacolata e del Crocifisso. Its interior features an 18th-century main altar and three side altars.
The Cappella dell’Annunziata was built in the 16th century at the instigation of Count Francesco Paladini. It has a single-nave interior with a main altar above which a painting of the chapel’s patron saint is displayed. On your visit, the architectural history here combines with a clearly structured sacred interior.
Remembering a Defining Event
The Monumento di San Lorenzo was erected in 1869 in memory of the severe cholera epidemic that struck Lizzanello in 1867.
Merine and Its Parish Church
In Merine, the Chiesa di S. Maria delle Grazie is the parish church; it dates from 1641 and was rebuilt in 1878. Its main altar features a wooden tabernacle from the 17th century by Fra Giuseppe da Soleto. The church also preserves a restored organ by Francesco Giovannelli dating from 1783.
Olive-Growing Culture and Local Character
The area around Lizzanello is particularly well suited to olive cultivation because of its natural characteristics. Thanks to the surrounding olive groves, Lizzanello is an important centre for the production of high-quality extra virgin olive oil. The semi-underground oil mill belonging to Masseria Fatalò is located in Lizzanello, at Via A. Gramsci 29. It was built in the 16th century by the Celestine monks.
Events in Lizzanello and Merine
The Centro Polifunzionale Ennio De Giorgi is used for events of various kinds, conferences and school events. Admission is free or subject to a charge, depending on the event planned.
The Sagra te lu Ranu is a traditional summer festival in Merine, a district of Lizzanello. Together with the churches, the Palazzo baronale Paladini and the olive-growing culture, the festival presents another facet of the town to consider when planning your trip.
