Marina di Mancaversa: Coast, Beaches and Maritime History

Marina di Mancaversa combines an approximately two-kilometre-long coastline with sandy coves, a small sandy beach and a seafront promenade. At the same time, churches and maritime traditions tell of different layers of the town. Coast, Coves and Seafront Promenade

Along the coast of Marina di Mancaversa, low, rocky stretches of shore and sandy coves extend for about two kilometres beside the clear and transparent Ionian Sea. Mare dei Cavalli is a small sandy beach approximately 300 metres long in Marina di Mancaversa. Walks are possible along the seafront promenade. Maritime Heritage and Water Activities

The seabeds off Marina di Mancaversa offer opportunities for diving, snorkelling and spearfishing. In the past, Marina di Mancaversa was used mainly as a fishing area. The name Mancaversa is associated with the dialect expression „Baccaversa“ meaning „upside-down boat“. This refers to the former habit of local fishermen of turning their boats around in the small cove at what is now Spiaggia dell’Jonio, so that they would remain anchored until the next departure.

Churches between the Settlement and the Provincial Road

The Chiesa dell’Immacolata stands in the heart of the urban settlement. The present building is designed in a distinctly modern style and is located on Piazza Sant’Anna. The nearby Chiesa di Santa Marina on the Taviano–Mancaversa provincial road was built in 1704 by Gerolamo Moschettini. It contains religious frescoes or tempera paintings from the 18th century, whose state of preservation is severely compromised.

The earlier development of the settlement is also part of the town’s history: around 1900, Mancaversa had only a few houses; wealthy families from Taviano used them as summer residences. Thus, the modern Chiesa dell’Immacolata, the older Chiesa di Santa Marina and the maritime past represent very different periods within the same local history.

Summer Events and Practical Orientation

In summer 2026, the public beaches of Marina di Mancaversa had six access walkways intended to enable people with disabilities to reach the beach. From 1 July to 7 September 2026, a daily bus shuttle connected Taviano with Marina di Mancaversa. The TerrAmare Sport 2026 programme provided free sports courses for adults and children in Marina di Mancaversa from 13 July to 22 August 2026. The municipality of Taviano’s TerrAmare 2025 summer events programme also included Marina di Mancaversa.
