Melissano: Historic Center, Palazzi and Olive Mills

In the Li Curti district, the underground olive mill was probably established in the 15th century and carved into the rock. Preserved there are bases for Calabrian presses from the 16th century and for Genoese presses from the 18th century. Masseria Cucuruzza includes a small chapel from the 16th century. Masseria Briganti o Quarta comprises an underground olive mill, storage rooms for processing agricultural products and threshing floors for chickpeas.

The ruins of Masseria Cuntinazzi are still visible today from the provincial road between Melissano and Felline; their construction probably dates back to the 15th century.

Churches and Regional Festival Culture

Melissano’s mother church has a Neo-Renaissance-style façade made of Lecce stone and is dedicated to the Beata Vergine del Rosario. The former church of Sant'Antonio was built around 1570 next to the ruins of the church of San Nicola. Focareddhe di San Biagio takes place on February 3 as a communal tradition centered on a bonfire and is connected with the cleansing ritual of Candelora on February 2.

In Melissano, culture is also connected with enjoyment. Cibo per Bacco is associated with a series of events held in July and August, featuring music, gastronomy and typical Salentine culture. VinImmagine is associated with an exhibition in August dedicated to wine and food products as well as folk traditions.
