Novoli: Fòcara, Churches and Cultural Heritage

Novoli combines its cultural history with festivals, sacred architecture, historic buildings and libraries. This gives you a destination that brings together different interests in religious art, local scholarship, rural working life and public cultural venues.

The Fòcara and the Festival Calendar

The Fòcara of Novoli is made from hand-woven vine branches and is lit on the night of 16–17 January. It is a 25-metre-high fire structure built by volunteers and experienced farmers from around 100,000 bundles of reclaimed vine branches. The panino cu li turcinieddri is associated with the celebrations surrounding the Fòcara. Novoli also hosts festivities in honour of Maria Ss. del Pane; the summer patron saint festival is scheduled for the third Sunday of July each year. These two dates provide a clear cultural framework for planning your trip.

Churches and Theatre

The Chiesa dell'Immacolata is the oldest church in Novoli and was the town's first parish church. It contains a fresco of the Madonna and Child from the first decades of the 14th century. The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate was opened for public worship in 1662. The Chiesa Cuore Immacolato di Maria at the Passionist monastery is designed in the Gothic style. The Chiesa di San Salvatore, now the Chiesa di Sant'Oronzo, preserves a stone altar commissioned by Alessandro Mattei from Giuseppe Cino in 1704.

Palazzi, Libraries and Rural Heritage

The Teatro Comunale was inaugurated in April 1891 with the Compagnia Almirante. The Palazzo Baronale housed the extensive library of Alessandro Mattei II, which the philosopher and physician Girolamo Marciano from Leverano used to complete his Descrizione di Terra d'Otranto. The Biblioteca Minima has more than 36,000 books and pamphlets, including a 15th-century parchment, an incunabulum, six Cinquecentine and rare editions. The Masseria della Corte, also known as the Masseria Baronale, in Novoli contains a 16th-century oil mill carved into the rock, known as the Trappeto “alla calabrese”. The Grotta Lago is regarded as evidence of agricultural and pastoral life in Novoli. For visitors interested in cultural history, Novoli thus brings together written heritage, rural working life and architectural evidence.

Getting Your Bearings Locally

The Palazzo Baronale currently hosts cultural activities and has a virtual classroom as well as a visitor centre. The operation and management of Novoli's tourist information point and the Museo del Fuoco have been extended until 31 December 2026. Novoli's railway station is also relevant for arrivals: it is well connected to Lecce and the rest of the province. This means that the cultural events and the railway connection to Lecce can be considered side by side as concrete points of reference when planning your trip.
