San Cassiano between Local History and the Paduli Landscape

San Cassiano is part of the Parco dei Paduli, an extensive rural landscape with olive trees and characteristic dry-stone structures. Religious Sites and Historic Architecture

In the centre of San Cassiano lies the Madonna della Consolazione rock church, carved into the tuff stone. It is accessed via a staircase with 15 steps and has three irregular naves. The church also contains a fresco influenced by Byzantine art and culture, depicting Saint Theodore on horseback. Those interested in sacred art and the town's religious character will find a tangible example here, right in the town centre.

Other buildings also reflect different historical periods. The Church of San Leonardo dates back to the 16th century, was inaugurated in 1849 after an almost complete reconstruction and has two bell towers. The Church of the Brotherhood of Maria Santissima Assunta was built in 1770 in the late Baroque style. The Ducal Palace of San Cassiano is a historic building dating from the 16th century. Its stone portal is decorated with columns on either side and opens onto a square atrium; the palace also has a loggia with three round arches and traces of painted decoration.

Exploring the Paduli on Foot and by Bicycle

The Paduli service centre on Via Vittoria in San Cassiano offers a map of the area, bicycle rental and guided tours. A guided cycling tour runs between San Cassiano, Nociglia and the Paduli countryside.

MIAB promotes and honours the area's historical and cultural heritage through workshops. Visitors and local communities are involved in creating a photographic archive documenting the state of preservation of the pictorial decoration in religious sites throughout the area. Thus, San Cassiano's cultural offering includes not only viewing churches and historic buildings, but also engaging with their surviving decoration.

During the Tavole di San Giuseppe ritual, doors open to pilgrims on 19 March to share food and hospitality. The date combines religious tradition with community gathering and gives local life a clear annual focal point.
