San Cataldo between the coast and the Salento hinterland

San Cataldo is characterized by a coastal landscape where the sea, sand and nature are closely connected. The coast is low-lying and predominantly sandy. A pine forest and the Le Cesine nature reserve separate the coast near San Cataldo from the Salento hinterland. As a result, different landscapes come together here within a compact area: the beach, the dune belt, the forest and the protected natural area shape the character of the town.

The landing place of San Cataldo was originally called Porto Adriano. The historic port was destroyed and rebuilt several times before being completely destroyed by Turkish attacks. The remains of the first port of San Cataldo, built under Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, are still visible and preserved.

Dunes, beach and protected vegetation

Measures were implemented for the dune landscape of San Cataldo that take the beach area and its vegetation into account. The dune project included a raised walkway providing access to the beach; space was left beneath the walkway so that the vegetation could regenerate over time. The 2021 dune works also created designated paths for beachgoers to prevent them from walking on the dunes.

In 2021, a project to restore the dune belt in San Cataldo covered approximately 100 metres near the Darsena, immediately north of Lido Ponticello.

Maritime connections and distinctive buildings

Another landmark is the Faro di San Cataldo. The lighthouse is an octagonal tower just over 23 metres high.

A small marina for pleasure craft and a few fishing boats lies north of San Cataldo beach. The marina can accommodate around 200 boats, each no more than 12 metres long and with a draught of no more than 1.5 metres; sailing boats are excluded.

Getting oriented around San Cataldo

In the area around San Cataldo, the Masseria Cesine visitor centre of the Le Cesine nature oasis can be reached from Lecce via the Tangenziale Est, exit 8B. Then follow the road to San Cataldo, turn towards Otranto at the traffic lights and, after approximately 2.8 kilometres, turn left onto the signposted access road. Continue along the paved road for approximately 1 kilometre to the visitor centre.

Salento specialities at the Sagra del pane

The local character also includes the Sagra del pane, a bread festival that was held in San Cataldo in summer. At the tastings of Salento specialities, particular attention was given to puccia con le olive. Pizzi were also served; these are made from dough kneaded with tomatoes and onions.
