Culture Between Sacred Space and Distinctive Art

San Cesario di Lecce combines sacred architectural history, unusual art and local culinary culture. This creates a destination whose character can be understood through various cultural traces. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista was built between 1320 and 1321 and is a rare example of Apulian Romanesque architecture in Salento. The Cappella della Madonna della Neve was built around 1750 at the request of a local brotherhood dedicated to the Virgin “delle Nevi”. The Universe of Ezechiele Leandro

The Santuario della Pazienza is particularly distinctive. It extends over more than 700 square metres in an open-air area beside the house museum. Ezechiele Leandro inaugurated the Santuario della Pazienza in 1975 after almost 15 years of work. It includes more than 2,000 figures made of concrete and discarded materials, including glass, iron, tyres and tiles. The Casa-Museo Ezechiele Leandro complex includes the Santuario della Pazienza, with sculptural groups made of stone, concrete and reused materials inspired by sacred iconography.

Museums, Images and Community Voices

The Casa-Museo Ezechiele Leandro houses paintings and sculptures by the Salento artist Ezechiele Leandro (1905–1981). The Museo Civico di San Cesario offers a different focus: it was established in 1979 as a museum of contemporary art and renamed “Museo Civico di San Cesario” in 1984. The Archivio Sonoro di Comunità is also available to anyone who wishes to learn about and explore aspects of the history of the local community. In San Cesario, you therefore encounter not only visible works, but also artistic and communal forms of expression.

A Local Character with Its Own Taste

Local culinary culture is also among the themes that make San Cesario di Lecce distinctive. The Distilleria De Giorgi was founded in 1906 by the brothers Vito and Nicola De Giorgi. Their Anisetta De Giorgi is a well-known spirit produced by the Distilleria De Giorgi and was awarded the Brevetto della Real Casa in 1920.
