San Dana: Church, Crypt and Historical Excursions

San Dana brings together sacred architecture, early history and historical excursions to specific sites. The town is home to the parish church of San Dana, whose interior is shaped like a Latin cross. San Dana is also home to the medieval Santa Apollonia Crypt, whose timeframe spans from the 6th to the 11th century and which was created by Byzantine monks of the Order of Saint Basil.

Santa Apollonia and the Sacred Traces

The walls of the Santa Apollonia Crypt preserve traces of frescoes from several historical periods. These include works from the 11th century and from 1758. Santa Apollonia is considered a possible rare example of pre-Byzantine monasticism in Italy; its origins may date back to the 4th century AD. The surviving traces therefore supplement the chronological classification of the crypt with several historical periods.

Archaeology and Historic Sites in the Surrounding Area

The archaeological area near San Dana contains a Roman villa with thermal baths. The San Dana district is also home to an underground oil press. Innovative technologies were used during work on the water supply network in the Gagliano del Capo area to avoid affecting the stability of this underground oil press. San Dana and its surroundings therefore contain archaeological, sacred and technological evidence.

The Della Croce Menhir is located in the immediate vicinity of San Dana. The surrounding area also contains Castello dei Gallone, Castello dei Trane and the Scalinata e Cascata Monumentale monument.

Piazza San Dana and Dated Events

Two events were scheduled to take place in Piazza San Dana in 2024. The seventh edition of “Salento-Albania. Un ponte tra le due sponde” was scheduled for 6 August 2024 from 8:00 p.m. The San Dana patronal festival was scheduled for 4 August 2024 from 6:00 p.m. These dates explicitly refer to 2024 and should not be understood as an ongoing events programme.

Beaches and Regional Excursions

Spiaggia Torre Pali and Spiaggia Lido Marini beaches are located in the vicinity of San Dana. Spiaggia Torre Mozza and Fontanelle Beach, on the other hand, are located in the wider surrounding region. The coastal destinations are therefore spread across the immediate vicinity and the wider regional surroundings of San Dana.

Routes Through the Surrounding Area

On the excursion from Macurano to San Dana, a path approximately 200 metres long leads at Serra di San Dana to a 17th-century palmento. In addition, the itinerary “Il mondo sommerso dei trappeti e dei luoghi di culto” connects the towns of Macurano, San Dana and Montesardo. The path and the itinerary complement these sacred sites with historic economic and cultural landscapes.
