San Donato di Lecce: Churches, Menhirs and Living Traditions

For culture-loving travellers, San Donato di Lecce combines religious buildings, stone monuments and festival traditions. The Chiesa Matrice della Resurrezione del Signore dates back to the Norman period, was completely rebuilt in the 17th century and completed in 1704.

The Curti Vecchi Menhir is a slightly inclined, square prism-shaped monument standing 3 metres high on an irregular rock shelf. San Donato di Lecce also has a railway station on the Lecce–Otranto line operated by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane.

Galugnano: Crypt, Frescoes and Art

In Galugnano, the Chiesa della Madonna della Pietà o M. SS. Addolorata was built in the second half of the 17th century over an existing crypt. In the single-nave interior, the old Basilian crypt is now integrated into the building and can be reached via a staircase in the centre of the nave. The presbytery contains a monumental altar dedicated to the Crucifix, decorated in the Baroque style; beside it stand statues of the Archangel Michael and Saint Dominic.

During restoration work on the Chiesa La Madonna della Neve in San Donato di Lecce, frescoes depicting saints of the Greek liturgy from the early 15th century were uncovered. The Chiesa di Maria Santissima Annunziata is a monument of Salento Baroque architecture, probably dating from 1665.

In Galugnano, the Museo della Civiltà Contadina “Terra di Vigliano” is a project of the volunteer association “AMICI DEL PRESEPE”. The Pinacoteca al Polo delle Arti presents a carefully selected collection of works from a collection donated by the heirs of the municipality of San Donato and now part of the shared common heritage. Together, these places offer insights into religious art, local everyday history and jointly preserved cultural heritage.

Palazzo Dellanos and Visible History

In 1587, the Spaniard Ramirez Dellanos became lord of the hamlet and commissioned the construction of the eponymous baronial palace, Palazzo Dellanos, on another building. Numerous graffiti can be found on the exterior and interior walls of Palazzo Dellanos.

Festivals with Music and Processions

The patron saint of San Donato di Lecce is celebrated on 7, 14 and 28 August. The festivities include colourful lighting, concerts and music, as well as a procession through the town’s streets with the statue of Saint Donatus, accompanied by songs and prayers. If you include religious traditions and community celebrations in your travel planning, these dates offer a specific cultural focus.

The Di Ussano Menhir

The Di Ussano Menhir stands on a hill near the ancient settlement of Ussano, in its original location. Its corners, which were bevelled at a later date, presumably served to emphasise its ritual function. Alongside churches and palaces, this stone monument adds to the view of older traces in the landscape.
