San Foca between harbour and coast

San Foca is a fishing village with narrow lanes, white houses and sea caves. A broad, heavily frequented waterfront promenade running through the town shapes its appearance. Marina and beach resort

The marina of San Foca has a 200-metre-long quay and three floating pontoons with a total of 150 berths for boats, as well as water and electricity connections. There are toilets, showers and free Wi-Fi; assistance is also available around the clock via VHF channel 12. The marina thus provides a clearly identifiable maritime focal point in the town.

The coast is also home to the “Io Posso” terrace, a beach resort for people with ALS, neuromotor disorders and other disabilities. For travellers with different needs, this place is a particularly relevant part of finding their bearings in San Foca. Boat trips and cycle route

Boat trips are offered from Porto di San Foca. The trips run along the coast of San Foca, Roca li posti (Grotte della Poesia), Torre dell’Orso and Sant’Andrea. Boats can anchor in bays, where passengers can swim; otherwise inaccessible rock faces and sandy coves can also be viewed. In this way, the harbour connects with a coastal experience that includes several prominent points along the water.

For exploring on land, municipal cycle route 3 also connects Torre dell’Orso, Roca Nuova, San Foca and Torre Specchia and is listed as 25.4 km long. An Info Surf Point was established in the Marina di San Foca in cooperation with the “Tre Oceani” sports association. The association runs Apulia’s first federal surf school recognised by the Italian Surfing Federation.

Tower, church and festivals

The Torre di San Foca was built shortly after the middle of the 16th century as a watchtower for observing the coast. The parish church of San Foca, dedicated to Maria SS. Assunta, was rebuilt in 1963. The current parish church also contains a statue of Saint Foca. Alongside the harbour and coast, these buildings and the religious life of the village provide further established points of reference.

During the annual Madonna del Mare festival, fishermen carry the statue of the Madonna out to sea in a procession. The patronal festival of San Foca takes place on 18 and 19 August.
