Serrano: Churches, Architectural History and Landscape in Salento

Historic Centre and Salentine Architecture

Typical 18th-century Salentine architecture defines Serrano’s historic centre. The historic centre extends between the Church of San Giorgio Martire and Palazzo Lubelli. Palazzo Lubelli also dates from the 18th century. The Chiesa Matrice “San Giorgio” is located on Corso Margherita, while the Cappella di San Leonardo is on Via Santa Marina in Serrano.

San Giorgio Martire: Architectural History and Interior

The present-day Church of San Giorgio Martire was rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century over an older structure dating from the 14th century. Its neoclassical pedimented façade features Baroque statues in two niches and three entrances. Inside, there is a Latin-cross layout, a single-nave plan and interconnected side chapels. These are complemented by Baroque altars, some of which date from the church’s 18th-century construction period.

Other Churches and a Clockwork Mechanism

The Church of Madonna del Rosario dates from the 16th century. About three kilometres from Serrano, the small Church of Santa Marina di Stigliano stands in the village of Stigliano. It was built in 1762 and has a Greek-cross layout. Serrano is also home to the oldest clock in Salento, which is still wound by hand. The range of sacred buildings therefore extends from a 16th-century structure to a church built in 1762.

Olive Grove, Menhirs and Cycling Route

In the area around Serrano, the Menhir di Stigliano is located in Casale Stigliano, in an olive grove along a dry-stone wall. The Menhir Croce di Marrugo has a rare two-pointed crown. On the opposite side of Serrano, the descent along the “Sua altezza” cycling route offers views of the Strait of Otranto.
