Spongano: Historic Centre, Olive Groves and Festive Traditions

Spongano is surrounded by centuries-old olive groves and dry-stone walls. Piazza Umberto I forms the entrance to the historic centre, where courtyard houses, churches and aristocratic palaces can be seen. The townscape thus brings together a rural setting and historic architecture – a fitting backdrop for travellers who want to discover Italy through built heritage and local traditions.

Churches, Palaces and Historic Buildings

The Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio was built in the second half of the 18th century. Originally, it had a single-nave layout; the two side aisles were added only towards the middle of the 19th century. Its design includes a polygonal apse decorated with stucco. Palazzo Bacile di Castiglione dates from the 16th century.

The Cappella dell’Immacolata was completed in 1636 and is also known as the “Congrega”. The chapel houses a canvas painting from 1653 depicting the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. The Cappella Sant’Antonio was built in 1747 as the family chapel of the Bacile barons.

The clock tower of Spongano was built in 1768 as a sedile, that is, a meeting place for representatives of the municipality to discuss public matters, and is a building in the late Baroque style. The Calvario consists of a chapel, a dome and a small structure crowned by an iron cross.

Menhirs, Dolmens and Local Traditions

The Piedi Grandi dolmen is located on the side road Strada vicinale Pastine, which joins the Spongano–Montesano municipal road, about 100 metres northwest of its entrance. It has two rectangular upright side slabs, one of which has a hole, as well as a square upper slab. The side slabs are 70 centimetres high; the upper slab is on average 110 to 120 centimetres wide.

The Osanna Menhir is an ancient monolith that was converted into a votive column in 1607. According to local tradition, on Palm Sunday the palm branches carried in the procession are laid at the foot of the menhir. This connects the older stone monument with a religious custom that extends into local festive life.

Festive Traditions and Local Specialities

Santa Vittoria is celebrated in Spongano from 7 August to 9 August with distinctive festive illuminations. The Festa delle Panare is a traditional celebration in Spongano; it was held on 22 December. The panare are baskets woven from willow and filled with pomace, a by-product of olive processing. At the Festa delle Panare, taralli and wine were offered to those present. The use of pomace connects the festive tradition with the olive groves surrounding Spongano.
