Discover Surano: Churches, Crypts and Historic Palazzi
Surano: Sacred Sites and Historical Depth
Surano reveals several facets of Italian local history. If you are interested in sacred architecture, underground spaces and historic palazzi, you will find specific sites in the town, each with its own character. Piazza del Municipio marks the starting point of the historic centre. The connection between the town centre and agriculturally used areas also offers a rural perspective on Surano.
Churches, Crypts and Underground Olive Mills
The existence of the casale of Surano has been documented since the end of the 12th century; at that time, it became part of the County of Lecce. The Chiesa Madre in Surano is flanked by the chapel of the Confraternity of Madonna delle Grazie and the clock tower. The Church of Madonna delle Grazie has a 19th-century façade decorated with festoons, pilasters and trompe-l’œil balustrades. It was designed by Filippo Bacile di Castiglione.
The San Giovanni Crypt is the oldest place of worship in Surano and has a distinctly Byzantine layout; its iconostasis has now disappeared. The underground olive mills are also part of the local history: until the 1930s, Surano had five of them, and at least two remain almost intact today.
Palazzi and Religious Traces
The historic palazzi in Surano include Palazzo “di don Pantaleo” and the palazzo in Piazza Martiri di Otranto; both are historic palazzi worth visiting. Palazzo Galati is one of the oldest and most significant architectural testimonies in the historic centre of Surano. Its structural layers date back at least to the 16th century.
Religious sites include the Calvario otto-novecentesco, a site from the 19th and 20th centuries worth visiting. The Cappella della Madonna del Piano (Madonna di Leuca, Cappella di S. Antonio) and its associated old cemetery lie along an ancient pilgrimage route. In past centuries, pilgrims travelled this route to the sanctuary of Leuca.
Town Centre and Rural Surroundings
The underground crypt of the Cappella di San Rocco is carved into the rock and divided by two pillars. It houses a fresco of John the Baptist as well as traces of old paintings. The mother church of the Assumption in Surano, the matrice dell’Assunta, dates from the 18th century. Guided visits in Surano are organised on request and with advance reservation.
For getting oriented locally, the connection between the town centre and the surrounding area is also part of Surano’s character. Surano’s town centre is connected to the agriculturally used areas by the Surano–Torre Paduli provincial road and by the local roads “Murta” and “vecchio cimitero”. If you are planning a hotel or other accommodation, you can first decide whether the historic town centre or the connection with the agriculturally used areas should be the focus of your trip.
