Taurisano: Churches, Trulli and Traces of Salento

Taurisano combines sacred architectural history, Baroque details and the rural forms of Salento to create a varied townscape. This mix is particularly evident in the churches: the Chiesa di Maria Santissima della Strada and the Chiesa matrice della Trasfigurazione di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo preserve different historical layers. They are complemented by the Casa natale di Giulio Cesare Vanini, trulli and megalithic stone monuments.

Churches with Byzantine and medieval traces

The Chiesa di Maria Santissima della Strada was built between the end of the 13th century and 1320. Its portal has an architrave depicting the Annunciation, regarded as one of the few examples of Byzantine sculpture in Apulia. Thus, a medieval construction date and a particularly noteworthy sculptural detail come together in a single building.

On the southern side of this church, a 14th-century Byzantine sundial is set beneath the 18th-century bell tower. The precise connection between the building, bell tower and sundial makes the church an informative reference point for the different periods that shape Taurisano’s townscape.

Baroque architecture and craft tradition

The Chiesa matrice della Trasfigurazione di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo was built in 1803 on the foundations of a demolished 16th-century church. Its dome consists of locally made, multicoloured glazed tiles. They were produced using an old technique typical of Salento. In this way, a regional craft tradition becomes visible alongside the architectural history.

In the historic centre stands the Casa natale di Giulio Cesare Vanini, a Baroque building with elaborately decorated doors and windows. Together, these buildings offer different perspectives on Taurisano, ranging from medieval and Byzantine traces to Baroque forms and regional ceramic craftsmanship.

Trulli, Contrade and stone monuments

The trulli are built from dry stone walls; locally, they are called “truddhi”. There are around forty of these structures in the Taurisano area, concentrated mainly in the Contrade Acquadolce, Saglietti and Silve.

Further historical traces can be found in a masseria that shows evidence of a Byzantine settlement as well as a fortified structure that probably served as a defence and observation tower. The Specchie are also part of Taurisano’s landscape. These megalithic stone monuments have origins dating back thousands of years and broaden the cultural perspective beyond the churches and historic centre.

Getting around and travelling to Taurisano

In the centre of Taurisano, a network of intersecting streets and lanes runs behind the buildings. Taurisano-Ugento railway station offers daily connections to Casarano, Nardò, Copertino and Lecce.
