Leporano: Fortresses, Coast and Wine

If you would like to combine historic architecture, coastal landscapes, wine and local festival traditions, Leporano offers several clearly distinct points of interest. Castello Muscettola stands in the historic centre, while the Parco Archeologico di Saturo is located on a coastal promontory between two bays. Along the coast, Lido Gandoli and Porto Pirrone are also important names to help you find your way around. Fortress history in the centre and on the coast

Castello Muscettola is located in the historic centre of Leporano and was a symbol of the feudal power of numerous noble families for centuries. Its original core dates from the 12th to the 13th century and includes the base of the main tower, which was intended at that time to serve as a Swabian watchtower. The walls of Castello Muscettola were built in the 16th century. In the following century, the defensive fortress was transformed into a residential palace; a small church and a viewing terrace were also added.

Another historical trace is the Batteria Cattaneo, an old coastal fortification in Leporano. It was built to protect the area from attacks from the sea. Two different forms of fortified history therefore stand side by side in the town: the aristocratic Castello in the centre and the coastal Batteria Cattaneo.

Saturo between archaeology and the coastal landscape

The Parco Archeologico di Saturo is located on a coastal promontory between the bays of Porto Saturo and Porto Perone. Two paths lead through the history of Saturo there: the history of Saturo at this site extends from the second millennium BC to measures taken in the present day. Today, Torre Saturo is integrated into the Parco Archeologico di Saturo-Porto Perone. This creates an excursion destination where archaeological periods, a historic tower and the coastal setting come together in a single themed area.

Wine and Apulian specialities

Casa Varvaglione offers guided cellar tours from Monday to Friday, except on public holidays. Registration is required at least one week in advance. The Connubio DiVino experience includes a 2.5-hour tasting of four wines from the 12emezzo collection for a minimum of four people: Malvasia Bianca, Negroamaro, Rosato and Primitivo Salento. Festivals and coastal experiences

The Festa Patronale di Sant’Emidio includes a novena, the handover of the town keys and processions with the image of the saint. The patron saint’s festival was introduced in 1794 and is celebrated on 4, 5 and 12 August in Leporano in the province of Taranto. On the coast, the bay of Lido Gandoli belongs to Leporano. At Porto Pirrone, there are opportunities for diving and pedal-boat trips.
