Beachscape with Its Own Character

Marina di Lizzano stretches for 7 kilometres along the Litoranea Salentina. Wide beaches with soft sand define this stretch of coast; the predominantly sandy, gently sloping seabed is suitable for calm swimming and bathing.

Free Beaches, Lidos and Accessible Services

Along the coast, long stretches of free beaches alternate with equipped lidos. The coast of Marina di Lizzano has been awarded the Green Flag in recognition of its child-friendly beach features. In the hamlet of Palmintiello, the equipped and accessible free beach service “Un ponte verso il blu” has resumed; the pilot project was launched in 2024. The specific service in Palmintiello supplements the free and equipped beach areas with an accessible offering.

Dunes, Macchia and Mediterranean Vegetation

Behind the beaches, coastal dunes shape the landscape. They are covered with protected Mediterranean macchia, including prickly juniper. In some places, the dune system is interrupted by small marshlands as well as extensive stands of Mediterranean pine and holm oak. This succession of sand, scrub vegetation, wetlands and groups of trees offers more than just a beach perspective and also makes the area interesting for attentive nature observation.

Routes, Kitesurfing and Boats

Route 12 – Lizzano, which is 8.6 kilometres long, can be travelled on foot or by bicycle; Marina di Lizzano is one of the route’s main attractions. Those who include Route 12 in their plans can use the 8.6-kilometre distance as a fixed framework for their day’s stage; the choice between walking and cycling depends on their personal pace. Marina di Lizzano is considered a kitesurfing spot for riders at intermediate, advanced and professional levels.

For small boats, Marina di Lizzano has a landing stage with seasonal berths on pontoons. Boats up to 10 metres long and with a maximum draught of 1.8 metres can moor there. The Ostone River is also known as the Canale dei Cupi; the 13-kilometre-long stream flows into the sea at Marina di Lizzano.

Archaeological Traces and Rural History

Along the Ostone River, particularly near the sea, pottery, gold, worked stones, votive sanctuaries and necropolises dating from the Bronze Age and the Magna Graecia period have been discovered; as well as an entire Neolithic village. Numerous rural masserie are located along the coast of Marina di Lizzano, including several fortified buildings from the Middle Ages. Torre Zozzoli is locally known as Torre Sgarrata.

The municipality of Lizzano also broadens the cultural context: the rock crypt of the Annunziata lies about one kilometre from the historic town centre and remains an important destination for Marian devotion and pilgrimages.
