Maruggio combines historic architecture, religious sites, coastal landscapes and festivals with local traditions. The character of the town can be experienced particularly through the historic centre, which developed around the Chiesa Madre Santissima Natività di Maria Vergine. Historic Centre and Architecture

The Chiesa Madre Santissima Natività di Maria Vergine was built in the 15th century and remodelled in later centuries. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and also shapes the historic heart of Maruggio. The Convento dei frati minori osservanti provides another architectural accent. It was built between 1534 and 1575 around a cloister designed as a four-winged portico. Its arcades are supported by imposing octagonal Carparo columns and complemented by cross-vaults.

The Chiesa di Sant’Eligio e della SS. Annunziata was built in the 16th century in the architectural style typical of the Renaissance. It has pedestrian access; there are no particular obstacles for people with disabilities or reduced mobility. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Tempio is among the architectural and artistic traces of Maruggio’s historic past. According to tradition, the Chiesa della Madonna del Verde was commissioned by the Knights of Malta.

The Castello dei Commendatori also combines historic substance with present-day use: it is now also a venue for cultural events and performances, including concerts, art exhibitions and historical reenactments. Access is via Via Umberto I. An arched gateway leads into a courtyard where the Cappella della Madonna della Visitazione once stood.

Coast, Dunes and Distinctive Natural Features

The Dune di Campomarino are designated as a Site of Community Importance. The Parco delle dune di Campomarino was established as a protected area in 1995 and covers the entire coast of Maruggio. In the area around Maruggio, the Foresta pietrificata di Torre dell'Ovo also features visible trunks and branches, some of which are still standing upright. Alongside the historic buildings, distinctive landscape features therefore also play a central role in choosing where to stay.

Festivals Between Faith and Local Culture

Maruggio’s patron saint festival takes place on 13 and 14 July. It includes a procession, illuminations, a marching band and a market with stalls that bring the historic centre to life. The Festa della Madonna dell’Alto Mare is celebrated at Ferragosto and is connected with a votive chapel on the Duna Capoccia-Scorcialupi. In this chapel, the Madonna is revered as the patron saint of seafarers and people of the sea.

The Festa della Madonna dell’Alto Mare also includes a procession on the sea from the port of Campomarino to its votive chapel, where it is welcomed with a firework display. Around the second half of August, Maruggio hosts the Strada dei Saperi e dei Sapori. The event brings together gastronomy, crafts, folk music and the preservation of local traditions.
