Palagianello between Gravina and the Rock Village

Palagianello lies on the edge of the Gravina of the same name and connects the modern town with a rock-cut district. The rock village stretches along the eastern edge of the Gravina di Palagianello, directly below Castello Stella Caracciolo. This creates a destination where the town, rocky landscape and historic buildings are closely interconnected.

Rock Churches and Fortress as Defining Features

The rock village comprises numerous rock churches, some of which preserve traces of their original frescoes. Above this historic setting stands Castello Stella Caracciolo, a defensive fortress built in the 16th century with four corner towers. Inside Castello Stella Caracciolo, a secret passage leads through a trapdoor to the Gravina. Such architectural details give the site particular depth: religious spaces, military architecture and the landscape carved into the rock can be encountered here in immediate succession.

On Foot through the Gravina Landscape

Paths and steps still make it possible to cross at least part of the rock village. The gravine around Palagianello are karst gorges that can be up to 200 metres deep and more than 400 metres wide. The area therefore appeals not only to visitors interested in cultural history, but also to you if you enjoy taking in a landscape step by step while connecting historic structures with a striking natural setting. Rupestrian Churches and a Rich Religious History

The Chiesa rupestre di Sant’Andrea lies on the eastern edge of the Gravina di Palagianello, about 80 metres north of the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie. In the rock church, a frescoed diptych depicts Sant’Andrea and the Virgin Mary; it is dated to the 13th century. The Chiesa rupestre di San Gerolamo preserves frescoes attributed to the 14th century. The Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie also reflects several construction phases: it was rebuilt in 1898, collapsed again on Christmas night in 1972 and was restored in 2000. Its entrance opens directly onto the Gravina. From inside, there is a view that conveys the impression of floating above the Gravina.

Tradition and Palagianello Cuisine

The Festa Patronale Maria SS. delle Grazie is firmly established in Palagianello as an annual civic and religious tradition. Traditional dishes from Palagianello cuisine are prepared and sampled as part of the festival. The Festa Patronale Maria SS. delle Grazie included guided tours of the Gravina on Easter Tuesday. In this way, the local festival culture connects with the religious and natural sites that shape the character of Palagianello.
