The Bay of Torre Columena is located in the “Palude del Conte e Dune Costiere” nature park. Torre Columena has an open beach with soft sand. Near the tower, the sand gives way to rugged rocks, creating a clear change in the landscape within the coastal area. During your stay, you can therefore take different beach preferences into account: the open sandy beach as well as the rockier coastline around the tower.

Salt Pans, Dunes and Protected Nature

The Riserve Naturali Regionali Orientate del Litorale Tarantino Orientale cover 1,113 hectares and consist of two separate areas. The second part includes the coastal areas of the salt pans and dunes of Torre Columena. The Salina dei Monaci is also part of this landscape. It is connected to the sea by a channel, which enables water exchange. The combination of bodies of water, salt pans and dunes gives the surroundings a distinctive natural history focus that clearly differs from a purely beach-oriented stay.

Towers and the History of the Coast

Torre Columena is part of the coastal tower defence system commissioned by Emperor Charles V. This system was intended to protect the Salento Peninsula from frequent foreign incursions. The ruins of a tower and the salt deposits of the Salina dei Monaci also bear witness to the past of a thriving market. Since summer 2021, the Museo delle Ceramiche has been located inside Torre Columena. This brings the military history of the coast, as well as the memory of salt production and ceramics, into focus in one place.

Attractions in the Surrounding Area

The historic site of Torre della Salina is located in the immediate vicinity of Torre Columena. The Monte della Marina mountain is also nearby. The Spiaggia delle Paludi del Conte beach is located there as well. Other destinations in the area include the historic site Ex Monastero dei Padri Benedettini d'Aversa, the ancient site Sito Archeologico di Scalo di Furno and the Museo di Biologia Marina museum. The beaches Spiaggia San Pietro Specchiarica and Togo bay la Spiaggia are also among the destinations in the area. This allows you to combine the coast with historical and natural history themes without limiting your stay to the main beach.

Guided Tours in Summer

Guided tours are planned for Torre Columena and its Museo delle Ceramiche “Cheramo e Bacco”. In July, they take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In August, they are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you would like to plan your visit around these times, you should take the different weekdays for July and August into account when planning.
