The first records of the Castello date back to 1154; at that time, al-Idrisi included Grottole in his account of the towns of Basilicata. Chiesa Diruta dates from the first half of the 16th century. There is a time gap between the first records from 1154 and the first half of the 16th century. Castello and Chiesa Diruta therefore represent different historical periods in Grottole, while the Castello’s distinctive location helps shape the town’s spatial character.
Pilgrimage at Fosso Magno
The Santuario di Sant'Antonio Abate represents another historical and spiritual focal point. Its first construction phase dates back to 1371. The Santuario stands at Fosso Magno above the Altojanni or Altogianni plateau. On the Monday and Tuesday after Pentecost, it is the destination of a pilgrimage. The pilgrimage date on the Monday and Tuesday after Pentecost is therefore tied to the movable feast of Pentecost.
