Termitito is an archaeological site in Scanzano Jonico protected by decree. The town’s buildings also provide insight into different historical periods. Masseria di Recoleta is a fortified manor house from the 17th and 18th centuries that was apparently built on the site of an ancient fortified medieval village. Pedro de Toledo commissioned the construction of Palazzo Baronale, which is also known as Palazzaccio. The feudal building has a square floor plan, an inner courtyard and a battlemented tower. Palazzo Recoleta features a wide portal, a square tower and two towers at the corners of the façade.

Churches and Local Festival Traditions

The Chiesa dell’Assunta preserves a silver crown from a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1715 and houses wooden sculptures from the 18th century. The Chiesa Madre Maria SS Annunziata contains a large stained-glass window depicting the Annunciation. It measures eight square metres, or 4 × 2 metres. The church was consecrated on 24 March 1963. The small Theotokos Chapel in Palazzo Baronale also features another historic depiction of the Annunciation: its bas-relief on the portal is dated to the year 1000. Religious and secular festivities in honour of Maria SS Annunziata have taken place every year on 2 May since 2016.
