Piazza Elettra and the Origins of the Town
Piazza Elettra is a meeting place and point of orientation in the district of Pisticci. At its centre stands the Torre littoria; surrounding it are buildings from the Fascist era and the Church of San Giovanni Bosco. The piazza was laid out in 1940 as a Fascist “rural piazza”. The complex includes a covered arcade, a lictor tower and public buildings: the town hall, post office and the headquarters of the GIL (Gioventù Italiana del Lavoro). The Church of San Giovanni Bosco was approved in 1955, completed in 1958 and consecrated on 6 May 1959.
History, Church and Festivals
Marconia was established in 1938 as “Villaggio Marconi” in honour of Guglielmo Marconi. At the same time, the town’s history includes the Fascist regime’s plan to designate Marconia as the operational centre of the Bosco Salice internment colony.
The Festa della Madonna delle Grazie combines religious devotion, culture and music and involves the entire community. It includes an annual artistic competition featuring local talent, from which the triumphal float emerges. The Festa della Musica is an annual event; in 2026, it will take place on 21 June from 8 p.m. in Piazza Elettra in Marconia.
Film, Media and Education
CineParco TILT offers students and teachers of all school levels an immersive experience centred on cinema and its forms of expression. CineDays takes place at CineParco TILT in Marconia di Pisticci on a fully equipped 20,000 m² site. The halls and laboratories support development, education and production in the film sector, incorporating VR, gaming, 3D animation and artificial intelligence.
Nature and Historic Surroundings
Fosso La Noce represents a protected landscape of approximately 43 hectares. The area follows the course of a ravine fed by several springs, including springs with sulphurous water. As an SIC/ZPS site, it is recognised as a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area for birds. Castello di San Basilio stands on a hill surrounded by olive groves and has a history dating back more than 1,000 years.
