Religious Sites and Their History

The parish of Madonna del Carmine in Contrada Tinchi di Pisticci was established on February 2, 1969. The Church of Madonna del Carmine in Tinchi was consecrated on July 15, 1973.

The Cappella di Cristo Re is also one of Tinchi’s religious buildings. It was completed in 1929 and is also known as the Cappella Lo Dico. The chapel commemorates the Tinchi teacher Angelina Lo Dico and the memory of her among former pupils. Its inauguration included a solemn procession that also passed through nearby rural areas.

Traces of the Enotri

The history of Tinchi goes back considerably further than the religious buildings of the 20th century. Ceramic fragments of the Enotri have been found in Tinchi. Their decorations consist of parallel bands, geometric segments or symmetrical dot patterns. Several Enotri necropolises have also been identified in Contrada Tinchi.

There was a sanctuary at a spring in Contrada Tinchi that was first used by the Enotri and later by the Greeks. Together with the ceramic fragments and necropolises, this site provides an archaeological perspective on the early cultures associated with Tinchi.

Festivals, Food and Community Traditions

The celebrations in Tinchi included the Sagra della cucuzza. In 2018, this festival was held for the second time, offering the opportunity to taste typical dishes from the Tinchi community. The event complements the historical and religious themes with an insight into the local food culture.

San Rocco is celebrated in Tinchi from August 14 to August 18. The statue of San Rocco is carried throughout the municipality of Pisticci for visits, including to Tinchi. Since around the 2000s, it has also been taken to the hospital in Tinchi and remains there for an entire day so that local residents, especially the sick, can visit it.

Madonna del Carmine and Processions

The first festival of Madonna del Carmine in Tinchi took place in July 1973. The statue of the Madonna arrived on July 15; on July 16, the first procession with the statue took place through the streets of the town. Also in 1973, the group of bearers of Madonna del Carmine was founded in Tinchi for the first time.

Mass times at the parish of Madonna del Carmine in Tinchi include 11:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Sundays during the winter period from October 1 to June 30, as well as 11:00 a.m. and 7:20 p.m. during the summer period from July 1 to September 30.
