Armento between archaeology and landscape
Armento combines a scenic location with an unusually diverse cultural landscape. The town lies among olive trees, forests and springs; caves, springs and streams also shape the landscape in the surrounding area. The Serra Lustrante archaeological site is an important cultural reference point. It is of particular importance for understanding the relationships between the Greek and indigenous worlds in the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. The sanctuary of Serra Lustrante is also associated with the tradition that it was probably dedicated to Heracles.
Churches with medieval and sacred art
Several churches give Armento a clearly recognisable religious and architectural profile. The Chiesa di San Luca Abate is an example of 12th-century medieval religious architecture in Basilicata. Inside, it houses a triptych depicting the Madonna and Child, along with Saints Luke and Vitale. The Chiesa di San Vitale was also built in the 12th century and is an example of Romanesque architecture in Basilicata. It features medieval frescoes and sacred works of art. The Chiesa di Maria Santissima della Stella is associated with a traditional festival in honour of Maria Santissima della Stella, featuring processions and rites. In Armento, you therefore encounter various forms of religious art and living tradition, without the town being reducible to a single historical theme.
Icons and places surrounded by greenery
The connection between art and spirituality also continues beyond the churches. The Galleria Civica di Armento is associated with a permanent exhibition of 25 Byzantine icons on gold leaf from the School of Lepanto. The exhibition is entitled Ori e Orazioni. Since 18 May 2026, the Galleria Civica di Armento has been open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 15:00 to 18:00.
The Chiesa di Santa Lucia al Casale is a historic church surrounded by nature. The Santuario Madonna della Stella was built in 1700 and is situated in an area surrounded by an ancient forest and lush greenery.

Armento is located in the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese. The park landscape offers activities on foot, on horseback and by bicycle as different ways to experience it. The springs, streams, caves and forests in the surrounding area form a distinct focus alongside the churches and exhibitions.
