Banzi: Between Roman Traces and the Bradano Valley

Banzi combines Roman and medieval traces with a location in the upper Bradano Valley. On the hill overlooking the Fiumarella stream, sacred heritage, Roman archaeology, local festivals, and the Fons Bandusia trail come together.

Sacred History and Ancient Testimonies

The Church of Santa Maria in Banzi was built in 797. The existence of the Abbey of Santa Maria can also be traced back to the end of the 8th or the beginning of the 9th century. Its remains are located in the center of Banzi’s present-day built-up area.

Banzi’s ancient heritage includes the Auguraculum, which was used to interpret divine signs based on birds and/or lightning. The Auguraculum is considered the only evidence in the Latin world of a temple dedicated to divination. Banzi is also associated with the Fons Bandusiae celebrated in Horace’s Ode III,13; however, the exact location of the spring is disputed.

Further traces of the past can be found in the Orto dei Monaci archaeological area next to the Abbey of Santa Maria. The remains of imposing Roman public baths with several construction phases are located there. A severe fire destroyed the baths and led to their final abandonment. Excavations also uncovered the remains of a Roman domus built around the 1st century BC. A mosaic inscription from the Julio-Claudian period of use refers to Romanius of the Tribus Camilia, a sacerdos who is said to have commissioned its execution.

The Tabula Bantina was also found in Banzi. A large necropolis was also investigated southwest of the modern town center, in Contrada Piano Carbone.

Historical Reenactments and Local Festivals

Banzi is associated with a traditional historical reenactment of the arrival of Pope Urban II, held every August. During the event, ladies, knights, dignitaries, armed men, and the people bring the streets of Banzi’s historic center to life as a living medieval tableau.

On April 26, 2025, Banzi hosted the ultramarathon event “6 ORE DEI TEMPLARI – Memorial Vito Frangione”; this was the 14th edition. In recent years, the Sagra del peperone crusco has also taken place during the first week of September on the streets of Banzi’s historic center.

Landscape and Trail Route

Banzi lies on a hill overlooking the Fiumarella stream in the upper Bradano Valley. In Banzi, the Fons Bandusia trail (BNZ-02) runs from the Grotte Banzullo to Nocellaro. At the starting point near the Grotte Banzullo, there is a large parking area for approximately ten cars.
