On the first floor of the Castello di Lagopesole is the Sala degli Armigeri, home to the Museo dell’Emigrazione Lucana. The museum offers a multimedia and immersive tour of the history of Italian emigration, with a particular focus on emigration from Basilicata.

The Castello di Lagopesole and Views over the Vitalba Valley
The Castello di Lagopesole is located in the immediate vicinity of Lagopesole. The building has a rectangular layout and is enclosed by four corner towers. At the same time, the Castello stands on a hill from which it overlooks the entire Vitalba Valley. Architecture and landscape stand directly alongside each other here: the clear geometry of the complex meets a wide view over the valley, giving the visit a clearly recognisable spatial focus.
Museums and Spaces of Remembrance
On the ground floor of the Castello is the Centro dei Lucani nel Mondo “Nino Calice”. It includes an archive and a library available for consultation, as well as a space for projections, events and thematic gatherings. Together with the Museo dell’Emigrazione Lucana, it creates a cultural point of access that addresses both the history of emigration and the connection between the Lucani and the world.
Digital and Immersive Cultural Formats
Interactive digital elements were planned for the renewed Archaeological Exhibition in the Castello di Lagopesole. These included multimedia totems, video projections and audio guides usable via smartphone. The immersive installation “Federico II - Stupor mundi” was also planned for the main courtyard. It was intended to combine light art and video mapping on the façades of the main courtyard with experimental sound research. These formats show how historic spaces were to be presented using digital and artistic means without losing sight of the Castello’s architectural framework.
Getting There and Finding Your Way Around
For travel by public transport, Castel Lagopesole railway station and the connections to Lagopesole are important reference points. The Foggia–Potenza railway line runs via Castel Lagopesole station; from there, a bus connection leads to Lagopesole, which is 3 km away. In addition, the SITA routes Potenza–Lavello, Melfi–Rionero–Potenza, Milano–Grassano and Torino–Grassano stop in Lagopesole at the Esso petrol station. Depending on how you arrive, the town can therefore be reached either via the railway station or directly via a stop in the town.
Walk, Guided Tour and Connection to the Town
A nature walk and a guided tour of the Castello di Lagopesole were planned for “Babylonica – Il lungo giorno dei popoli”. The parade was intended to pass through the town and include four “Dancing Points”, where the groups would stop to engage the audience. The planned format thus combined movement around Lagopesole, the castle complex and a public gathering in the town.
