Chiaromonte between Pollino and the Sinni Valley

Chiaromonte lies within Pollino National Park at an elevation of 794 m, on a rocky promontory above the Sinni Valley to the south and the valley of the Torrente Serrapotamo, a tributary of the Sinni, to the north. The historic center is arranged in an amphitheater-like layout on this rocky promontory.

Rock Caves, Red Wine and Local Tradition

The distinctive character of the town includes numerous caves carved into the rock. They are used to store handcrafted red wine produced from local vineyards. The Festival delle Tradizioni e della Musica Popolare is associated with Parco Torre Spiga and Parco delle Cantine in the municipality of Chiaromonte.

Archaeology at the Museo di Giura

The Museo archeoantropologico “Lodovico Nicola di Giura” combines the study of ancient physical anthropology with the archaeology of the Oenotrians. Its collections and interdisciplinary research focus on reconstructing the historical-anthropological development of the Enotrian-Italic communities of Chiaromonte and Guardia Perticara.

Opening Hours and Reservations

The museum is open on Mondays from 13:00 to 18:00, Tuesdays from 09:00 to 14:00, Wednesdays from 09:00 to 14:00, Thursdays from 13:00 to 18:00 and Fridays from 09:00 to 14:00. Regular opening hours are spread across five days of the week. Visits on Saturdays and Sundays are possible by prior reservation. Guided tours on other days and at other times can be booked by email at museo.chiaromonte@gmail.com; the minimum group size is ten people. The museum’s regular time slots are in the afternoon on Mondays and Thursdays, while on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays they are in the morning. This makes it possible to combine a museum visit with other destinations in the town as part of your daily itinerary. Prior reservation remains necessary on weekends and for guided tours at different times; groups must consist of at least ten people.

Medieval Churches and Fortifications

The Castello dei Sanseverino is connected to an adjoining medieval fortification trail. The Collegiata Insigne di San Tommaso Apostolo is one of the historically significant monuments of Chiaromonte. The Chiesa madre di San Giovanni Battista dates from the 12th to the 13th century. It contains a wooden Madonna and Child enthroned, created around 1200.
