Fraccia between mountain landscapes and culture

Fraccia can be explored through hiking trails, impressive landscapes and cultural and historical sites. Hiking trails starting from Fraccia lead to Sorgente Fontanelle, listed as 1.0 km in the route sequence, as well as to Monte Alpi at 4.5 km and the Belvedere Giardino dei Loricati at 5.1 km. The different trail lengths give you a clear basis for organising your personal priorities when planning your trip.

Monte Alpi and the Malboschetto Forest

Monte Alpi is home to Italy’s northernmost population of loricato pines. Around 1,000 specimens are spread across elevations between 1,200 and 1,700 m. This elevation makes the population a distinctive natural feature around Fraccia and provides a specific connection to the mountain landscape that you can take into account when choosing your day-trip destinations.

The municipal Malboschetto forest of Latronico covers approximately 700 hectares. A road through Malboschetto leads to a mountain hut at an elevation of around 1,000 m. There are equipped areas with tables, benches and fire pits. The forest, mountain hut and these facilities therefore serve as independent points of reference for days spent in the surrounding landscape.

Trails, views and unusual natural features

The SI T04 hiking trail from Latronico to Castelsaraceno heads towards Monte Alpi and reaches the Santa Croce summit at an elevation of 1,893 m. In addition, three hiking trails starting from Fraccia lead to different destinations: one route leads via Sorgente Fontanelle, one via Monte Alpi and one via the Belvedere Giardino dei Loricati. The route sequence specified for each gives the distances as 1.0 km, 4.5 km and 5.1 km respectively.

At the eastern and northeastern edge of Latronico’s historic centre, the Calanchi form a scenic viewpoint. Erosion and the runoff of clay-rich soils have created sharp-edged ridges. From there, you can look out over the Pollino massif, the Monti di Lauria, Colle dei Greci and large parts of the Sinni Valley.

The fossils also give the area a distinctive character. Below Monte Alpi, in Contrada Iannazzo, a fish fossil measuring 235 cm in length and 95 cm in height can be seen on a large slab of rock. The rostrum is 30 cm long. The fossil is considered to be a specimen of the Istiophoridae family from the makaira genus, known to anglers as marlin, and dates from around 30 million years ago. In the wider regional area around Fraccia, Solarino di Iannazzo is also home to a gigantic fish fossil that is 30 million years old.

Archaeology and Earth Cinema in Latronico

The five caves of Calda in Latronico contain archaeological finds dating from 8,000 to 1,300 BC. At the Museo Civico Archeologico in Latronico, you can see two exhibition rooms featuring finds from the caves of Calda and the indigenous Oenotrian necropolis of Colle dei Greci. This creates a direct thematic connection between the natural environment and the history of early settlement.

Earth Cinema takes a special form in Latronico’s thermal park: it is a 45 m-long incision dug into the earth, which people can enter from both sides. Together with the Calanchi, the caves of Calda and the archaeological exhibition rooms, it creates a cultural and landscape experience that clearly differs from a purely mountain hike.
