Gallicchio between the historic center, art, and landscape
Accommodation in Gallicchio
Gallicchio between the historic center and the landscape
Gallicchio was rebuilt on the rocks of the Fosso dei Monaci in rugged terrain surrounded by caves. The medieval historic center includes the Chiesa Vecchia, dedicated to the Assumption, as well as the Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine, located in the old town and dating from the early 17th century. This creates an opportunity for your travel planning to combine local history, sacred art, and landscape, with paths leading into archaeological and protected natural areas.
Sacred art and historic buildings
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta preserves a painting of the Madonna del Carmine created in 1613 by Giovanni Angelo D’Ambrosio. Its furnishings also include a high altar with gilded stucco decoration, as well as 18th-century wooden statues of the Immacolata and the Assumption. The Cappella della Madonna del Carmelo was built in 1613 on the ruins of a church destroyed by fire. In the Chiesa del Carmine in the upper part of Gallicchio, there is a fresco of the Madonna between Saints Leonardo and Pietro by Giovanni Angelo D’Ambrosio.
Sentiero Belvedere and natural surroundings
For those interested in nature and hiking, the Sentiero Belvedere is a clear focal point. It is 3.2 km long and runs at an elevation of between 611 m and 738 m. Its route leads from the Chiesa del Carmine to the archaeological area of Gallicchio Vetere. The entire Sentiero Belvedere runs through Natura 2000 sites and within the boundaries of the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Lucano. At Piana della Neviera, the route follows an old tratturo that connected Gallicchio with San Chirico Raparo and descended into the Agri Valley.
A trekking tour in the SIC Murge di S.Oronzo can lead from the banks of the Agri, lined with riparian vegetation, through adjacent oak forests to an extensive evergreen woodland. The SIC also includes conglomerate pillars more than 100 meters high, as well as a gorge formed by river erosion. The landscape is home to endangered animal species including the otter, griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture, and Apennine wolf. If you would like to combine nature and culture, you can consider these natural areas and the medieval historic center as distinct focal points for your planning.
Palazzi and memory
Gallicchio’s secular architectural history has also shaped the town. Palazzo Mazziotta is considered one of Gallicchio’s palazzi, which belonged to the former feudal lords. Palazzo Baronale was built around the 1620s, consists of two sections separated by an inner courtyard, and has a vaulted entrance. In 1979, it was placed under protection as an asset of artistic and historic interest considered worthy of preservation.
Archaeological heritage and “MEMORARE IUVAT”
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Siritide in Policoro preserves finds from excavations in the archaeological area of Gallicchio Vetere. These include numerous fragments of roof tiles, pithoi, loom weights, and a hoard of 13 silver coins from various mints of Magna Graecia. “MEMORARE IUVAT” refers to an initiative in Gallicchio to recover and enhance the community’s historical memory from the Saracen period through the barony. Its program included a performance entitled “Lo Scaliello d'Orlando.”
