Ginestra: Arbëreshë Culture, Landscape and Local Cuisine

Ginestra preserves the Arbëreshë language, traditions and cultural identity to this day. In the town centre, in the religious buildings, in the craft of herbal medicine, in the fields and in the cuisine, different concrete expressions of this heritage can be encountered. These themes range from Albanian-influenced place names and religious buildings to agricultural areas and a seasonal pasta dish from the local cuisine.

Arbëreshë Traces in the Town Centre

In the town centre, streets and squares bear Albanian names. The characteristic Arco Forno is located on Piazza Raffaele Ciriello. Ginestra’s main church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, stands on Piazza San Nicola and dates back to the 16th century. Palazzo Allamprese on Via Garibaldi also dates back to the 16th century. In the town centre, the Albanian names of the streets and squares meet the specific names Piazza Raffaele Ciriello, Piazza San Nicola and Via Garibaldi.

Religious Buildings and Art

The Santuario di Santa Maria di Costantinopoli was built in 1588. On the main altar of the Santuario di Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, there is a fully overpainted fresco of the Madonna di Costantinopoli, originating from the 16th century. Ginestra also has a Byzantine mosaic of Christ Pantocrator.

Medicinal Herbs as a Craft

Ginestra’s traditional herbal medicine includes growing, drying and processing herbs into healing infusions. In every workshop, visitors are shown the entire production cycle through to the finished product. The path to the finished product therefore does not begin only with preparing the infusions, but already with growing the herbs.

Slopes and Fields

On the slopes towards Monte Vulture, rows of grapevines and olive trees shape the landscape. Ginestra’s agricultural landscape also includes vast, golden grain fields. The slopes towards Monte Vulture provide the geographical setting for the grapevines and olive trees; the grain fields complement this area with open agricultural land.

Local Cuisine

Ginestra’s culinary tradition includes salsiccia, soppressata and capocollo, served with Aglianico del Vulture DOC. Dose is a traditional handmade tagliatelle dish from Ginestra that is eaten especially in winter. The cuisine here combines cured meats, wine pairing and a dish that is eaten especially in winter.

Getting There and Orientation

For getting around locally, free parking is available in the town centre and near Ginestra’s main sights. Rionero–Atella–Ripacandida railway station on the Foggia–Potenza railway line is a rail connection point for Ginestra and is served by Trenitalia. Regional bus lines operated by FAL and Cotrab connect the main cities of Basilicata with Rionero in Vulture. Via Rionero in Vulture, rail and bus services connect Ginestra to the regional transport network.
