Historic Centre and Roman Heritage
The historic centre of Grumento Nova features an intricate maze of narrow streets lined with old palaces. A prominent religious landmark is the Chiesa del S.S. Rosario, built in 1680. The historic townscape also includes the Norman Castello San Severino. It dates from the 11th century and was restored in the 18th century.
The Archaeological Park of Grumentum preserves the remains of one of the most important Roman cities of Regio III: Lucania et Bruttii. The archaeological route leads to the Terme maggiori, an exceptionally well-preserved thermal bath complex with mosaics and imported marble. The route ends near the monumental amphitheatre, one of the oldest known amphitheatres built in masonry. At the Museo Archeologico Nazionale dell'Alta Val d’Agri, the historical span extends from the Pleistocene to the Early Middle Ages.
Rivers, Views and Forest
Alongside its ancient and medieval traces, water and landscape shape further facets of Grumento Nova. The Piazzale Aurora Sanseverino was laid out on the remains of the castle and is equipped with a panoramic telescope. The Bosco dei Cigni is also known as Bosco di Maglie, extends to the shores of Lago del Pertusillo and has equipped picnic areas. Together, the river confluence, viewpoint and lakeside landscape offer different starting points for a trip that gives equal consideration to culture and nature.
Religious Life and Festivities
The festivities at the Santuario della Madonna di Monserrato include a procession in which the image is carried to Monte on the Tuesday after Easter Sunday. This specific date connects the religious site with an established part of the local annual cycle and adds a living cultural dimension to the historical themes.
