Archaeology and Local History
The Museo Civico Archeologico preserves finds from the Grottos of Calda dating from 8000 BC to 1300 BC. The five Grottos of Calda themselves also contain formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, as well as archaeological material from the same period. Those interested in early settlement and the development of local cultures will therefore find several different points of connection.
The Museo Civico Archeologico also displays finds from the Oenotrian necropolis of Colle dei Greci dating from the 7th and 6th centuries BC. The Parco Archeologico Colle dei Greci appears to have been inhabited between the 7th and 5th centuries BC by small groups of Oenotrian origin. This chronological classification remains part of the historical account and should not be equated with a continuous settlement history.
Latronico’s architectural and religious heritage includes the Basilica Pontificia Minore di Sant’Egidio Abate and the Chiesa di San Nicola. The basilica has an interior with three naves divided by six columns with Doric capitals. The Chiesa di San Nicola dates from the 12th century and houses the oil painting Madonna della Pietà by Simone Oliva, created in the 18th century and restored in 1852.
Thermal Tradition and Everyday Life
Thermal springs rise in the village of Calda near Latronico. The Museo del Termalismo is located in the historic thermal establishment built in 1928. Its eight sections focus on thermal treatments and spa tradition, local crafts, traditional foods, rituals and festivals, as well as emigration. In addition, the Museo della Civiltà Contadina contains 780 objects. They cover traditional crafts such as the work of carpenters, blacksmiths and shoemakers, as well as the cultivation of grapes and grain, the bedroom and transport.

Monte Alpi, Forest and Calanchi
Monte Alpi is home to Italy’s northernmost stand of loricate pines, numbering around 1,000 specimens. The trees grow at elevations between 1,200 and 1,700 m above sea level. Malboschetto is Latronico’s approximately 700-hectare municipal forest.
I Calanchi are a distinct type of landscape. They are formed through erosion and the runoff of clay-rich soils, creating fan-shaped sharp ridges and narrow, steep gullies. From I Calanchi, there are views of the Pollino Massif, the Monti di Lauria, Colle dei Greci and a large part of the Sinni Valley.
