Laurenzana is located in the Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese National Park. Laurenzana’s feudal castle also forms part of the town’s historical character; it dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. The stone houses, which shape the town’s distinctive views, also give Laurenzana its own character. In the mother church, an incorrupt body is preserved in a display case visible to all worshippers. Laurenzana preserves its history not only in its buildings. The historical re-enactment of Taccone’s life and early 19th-century brigandage takes place every year in August in Laurenzana’s historic centre, with staged performances and original storytelling. The Carnevale Estivo di Laurenzana is held year after year as a continuation of the winter carnival tradition. On 16 July, the religious festival of the Santuario “Beata Vergine del Carmine” also takes place, featuring a solemn procession carrying the statue through the town’s streets.

The landscape includes the Abetina di Laurenzana, which is recognised as Special Area of Conservation IT9210005 under Directive 92/43/EC (the “Habitats Directive”). The Abetina di Laurenzana can also be visited as part of guided visits for school groups.
