Churches and Sacred Art

The Chiesa di San Giacomo stands in the lower part of the town. It was originally dedicated to Saint Matthew. Between 1452 and 1482, Saint James became its patron saint. The church also contains a carved wooden choir, the oldest part of which dates from 1554. The combination of architectural history and craftsmanship makes San Giacomo an important cultural reference point in Lauria.

The Chiesa San Nicola di Bari adds another dimension to this picture with a particularly early written record: the oldest document in its historical archive dates from 1522. The church furnishings include three limestone portals dating from 1894.

The vault of the nave of the Chiesa San Nicola di Bari features tempera paintings of Saint Nicholas, the Last Supper and the Madonna and Child. In Lauria, you can therefore encounter different forms of sacred art—from the carved wooden choir to the large-scale paintings.

Castello and Santuario

The Castello in Lauria has an octagonal layout. Traces of the side towers have survived. The complex thus represents another facet of the town, where the preserved architectural forms and the visible remains of the past directly complement one another.

The Santuario della Madonna delle Armi occupies a particularly striking location: it stands on a rock in a dominant position overlooking the valley of the River Noce. The high altar features a 19th-century canvas depicting the Assumption of Mary into heaven. The site thus combines the religious significance of the sanctuary with expansive views of the landscape.

Mountains, Hiking and Winter Sports

Lago Laudemio is a glacial lake situated above 1,500 metres in the Sirino mountains behind Lauria. The Lauria area is suitable for hiking during the milder seasons.
