Landscape in the Upper Agri Valley

Marsico Nuovo is situated on the western side of the Upper Agri Valley at an altitude of 865 metres. Nature, culture and history offer various points of interest here: the Fontana delle Brecce–Piana del Lago natural complex, sacred art and historic buildings.

The Fontana delle Brecce–Piana del Lago natural complex lies within the Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese National Park. The area features beech and pub oak forests, springs and seasonally flowing streams. The Grotta di Castel di Lepre is considered the longest cave system in Basilicata and extends for almost two kilometres into the mountain.

Forests, Springs and Trails

The Fontana delle Brecce–Piana del Lago area is suitable for hiking, cycling tourism and trekking. From the Rifugio Fontana delle Brecce, a trail approximately 2 kilometres long leads through the forest to a wooden bridge reserved exclusively for pedestrians, which is connected to the village of Piana del Lago. Piana del Lago has a body of water fed by local springs, as well as drainage channels with the character of streams. There is also a flat circular route approximately 1,000 metres long, suitable for sporting activities throughout the year.

Churches and Sacred Art

The stone portal of the Chiesa di San Gianuario is supported by Corinthian-style columns and features medieval bishops and abbots in bas-relief. This work has been declared a national monument. The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine is attached to the Monastero di San Tommaso di Canterbury and dates from the 13th to the 14th century. It houses a 14th-century wooden sculpture of the Madonna and Child, attributed to Giovanni di Nola.

The Museo di arte sacra preserves and displays religious works of art and sacred objects of historical and artistic value. The Chiesa di San Giorgio e San Gianuario also contains a medieval fresco from the Chiesa di San Francesco, which is among the oldest paintings in the area.

Palazzo Manzoni and Medieval Traces

The Palazzo Manzoni building complex was originally founded in 1179 by Guglielmo III Guarna as an Augustinian monastery and was later converted by Ruggero Sanseverino into a Benedictine nunnery. The monumental complex covers approximately 7,000 square metres and includes courtyards, paths and the remains of buildings surrounded by imposing stone walls.

The Chiesa di San Giorgio e San Gianuario replaced the former cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo. In 1131, Bishop Enrico and Count Goffredo Guarna had a new cathedral built at the present site in Romanesque forms. Near the Fonte di San Giovanni, two milestones from the Diocletian era and several funerary stelae dated to the 3rd century AD were found. In the Middle Ages, the Fonte di San Giovanni supplied water to the nearby Rocchetta of the Sanseverino counts.

Passeggiate nella Storia

Passeggiate nella Storia is a historical and gastronomic walking tour held annually in the second half of August in the old Civita district. The 2025 edition was the 25th and commemorated Saint Thomas Aquinas’s visit to Teodora. The Passeggiata nella Storia Marsico Medievale featured medieval scenes and old taverns serving traditional dishes. Thus, alongside nature trails and church art, historical stories and traditional dishes are also among the themes that make Marsico Nuovo an interesting destination for an individual trip to Italy.
