Missanello lies with its village on a hill and overlooks the entire Val d’Agri. A large area of olive groves stretches around the town. The elevated location places the medieval village in a direct spatial relationship with the valley, while the groves shape the area surrounding the town.

Churches and sacred art

One of the cultural points of interest in Missanello is the mother church of San Nicola Magno, which dates from 1578. The Church of San Rocco is a simple building in the late medieval or Renaissance style. Its plain façade is complemented by a bell gable. Inside there is a statue of Saint Roch from the 17th or 18th century, as well as several votive frescoes. In the Church of Madonna delle Grazie hangs a painting created by Pietrafesa in 1613, depicting the appearance of the Child to Saint Anthony of Padua.

The medieval fortress of Missanello

The castle of Missanello is a medieval fortress in the village of the same name in the Province of Potenza. The building was inhabited by the feudal lord. Until 1855, the entire castle was made available for use by the Friars Minor of Saint Francis. During major plague epidemics, they took in people in need, especially the sick.

Maiatica and the olive groves

The Maiatica olive variety predominates among the olive trees of Missanello. Some olive trees of this variety are several centuries old. Missanello is also one of the municipalities in Basilicata renowned for producing extra virgin olive oil from the Maiatica olive variety. The Festa di San Rocco is Missanello’s patron saint festival. The 2024 Festa di San Rocco featured a religious procession, a marching band and evening events. The Sagra della Castagna is a walking festival in the village or the surrounding countryside. At this festival, tastings of chestnuts and local wine, as well as folk music, are part of the program. Thus, local festivals range from the Christmas nativity scene and the religious celebration to the chestnut festival with regional food, wine and music.
