Beneath the presbytery of San Gerardo Cathedral are the remains of a sacellum dedicated to Sant'Oronzo, dating from the 5th to 6th century. The Church of San Francesco d'Assisi was founded in 1274. Its 16th-century exterior portal has eight rows of panels depicting the Christological monogram of Saint Bernardino of Siena. These two churches alone reveal the historical depth of the city.
The Dinu Adamesteanu National Archaeological Museum of Basilicata is housed in Palazzo Loffredo. The same palazzo also contains a municipal gallery where important cultural events take place. Roman Traces and Special Places
Villa Malvaccaro is the only Roman villa excavated in the Potenza area. The villa contains a triclinium with a mosaic floor whose central medallion depicts the Three Graces. Remains with foundations dating from Roman times have survived at Ponte di San Vito; the bridge was originally called Sant'Oronzio.
Getting Around Between the Lower City and the Centre
The first mechanised section of Potenza's escalators leads from the lower part of the city up to the historic centre. It was inaugurated in 1994 and connects Viale Marconi with Via del Popolo, with stops at Viale Dante, Via Vespucci and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. The Santa Lucia mechanised route connects Via Tammone with Porza Salza over 600 metres and includes two inclined lifts for people with disabilities. These specific connections show how strongly the topography shapes orientation in Potenza.
