It was established in 1971 and was the world's first protected area dedicated to protecting the Vulture bramea moth.

The Chiesa dell’Annunziata was created as a private oratory of the Marc’Antonio di Silvio family. It appears to date back to 1700 and is first mentioned in the visitation records of 1759. After the earthquake of 1851, it was almost completely rebuilt and enlarged; in addition to the main altar, altars dedicated to Saint Anthony, Our Lady of Sorrows and the Madonna del Buon Consiglio were added. The Chiesa del SS. Sacramento stands on the site of the former church of Santa Maria de’ Rivonigro, in the centre of the original settlement, which disappeared in the first half of the 14th century. Its present nave was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1851, between 1857 and 1879, and enriched with altars dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Sorrows, Saint Francis of Paola and the Cross.

Events and Regional Experiences

The Via Crucis leads through the streets of Rionero and presents the Passion of Christ as a staged performance. “Briganti o Migranti” includes historical re-enactments, immersive settings, period costumes and live performances as part of its event format. The series is associated with consecutive editions in Rionero in Vulture for 2025 and 2026.
