Rotonda between history and nature

Rotonda combines sacred history, routes through the historic old town, natural caves and regional products. The Santuario di Santa Maria della Consolazione is located about 1 kilometre from Rotonda and can be reached via a stone-paved avenue. Construction began in 1558 and was completed in 1574. Churches and historic traces

The Chiesa Natività was built in the first half of the 18th century. Its central nave has a vaulted ceiling painted with biblical scenes. Madonna del Rosario dates back even further: it is the oldest religious building in Rotonda and was built approximately between 1100 and 1200. Both churches give the townscape different historical accents.

The Chiesa dell’Annunciazione also combines architectural history with preserved furnishings. According to approximate dating, it was built around 1700 by members of the Confraternita di Sant’Antonio; a pipe organ has been preserved inside. Palazzo Tancredi stands on Corso Garibaldi, a noble residence where a great military commander once stayed. A plaque on the main façade commemorates this.

Museum, washhouse and elephant sculpture

At the Museo naturalistico e paleontologico, the view extends well beyond the town’s history. The museum displays the remains of a specimen of “Elephas antiquus italicus” from the Middle to Upper Pleistocene, dating from 400,000 to 700,000 years ago. It also contains an almost complete jaw of Hippopotamus antiquus, which probably lived during the Middle Pleistocene. The museum’s listed opening hours are 09:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 19:00.

Fontana Susu was the town’s former washhouse and has three stone waterspouts shaped like lions’ heads. Another motif can be found in the newer part of Rotonda: the Fontana monumentale dell’Elefante is an elephant sculpture commemorating the elephants that lived in this area in prehistoric times.

Natural caves and routes through Rotonda

The Grotta dell’Eremita is a natural cave associated with Rotonda. The same applies to the Grotta della Voragine. Both names add a connection with nature to the cultural attractions, so you do not have to limit the town’s themes to churches and museums.

The “della pietra” route is available for exploring the historic part of the town and runs along the lanes of Rotonda’s historic old town. The “delle acque” route allows you to see notable fountains in Rotonda carved by the stonemason Giuseppe Di Consoli. He is the last representative of a centuries-old tradition.

Local products in August

The region’s everyday culture is particularly evident at the annual “Il Bianco e la Rossa DOP” festival held in August. The focus is on Melanzana Rossa DOP di Rotonda and Fagiolo di Rotonda DOP. In addition to churches, palaeontology and natural caves, Rotonda therefore also offers a clear culinary focus for planning your trip.
