Castle, Churches and Art in the Town
In 1593, a new building was erected on the remains of a late Byzantine predecessor in the Baronial Castle. In the courtyard stands an oval tower with an elliptical floor plan, one of the few surviving and visible examples of its kind in Europe. Palazzo Galasso is a building complex dating from the early 19th century; it houses the Civic Art Gallery “Michele Antonio Saverio Cancro”.

The Church of Santa Maria ad Nives served as the cathedral for almost 400 years, from the 15th century until 1818, during the temporary relocation of the seat of the Diocese of Satriano. The Church of the Annunciation houses an expressive and dramatic PietĂ statue group, as well as other works of the Neapolitan school. Its modernized bell tower preserves three historic bells.
Murals, Crafts and Rock Cellars
Around 150 murals adorn the streets and façades of the historic center of Sant'Angelo Le Fratte. Many of these murals depict local traditions, especially winemaking. The craft tradition “La lavorazione del rame” is represented by artisan workshops in the historic center. An extensive series of sculptures is spread throughout the town, enriching the views of Sant'Angelo Le Fratte.
Outside Sant'Angelo Le Fratte lies the village of Santa Maria Fellana. There, Villa Giacchetti preserves an 18th-century fresco cycle with Rococo decoration. Thus, in the area surrounding the town, older sacred and decorative art forms are also prominent alongside murals and sculptures.
In August, the more than 100 cellars provide the setting for the food and wine tour “Le Cantine Aperte di Sant’Angelo Le Fratte”. You can explore the cellars and sample typical local foods and products. The cellars carved into the rock have been linked together into a single tour; tastings include wine, cheese, cured meats, as well as other typical products and dishes from Lucanian cuisine.
Landscape and Special Events
The rugged Mount Carpineto dominates the valley of the Melandro River. Bosco di Montepiano belongs to the European Union’s Natura 2000 network: because of its flora, it is designated as a Site of Community Importance, and because of its wildlife, as a Special Protection Area. Falcons, buzzards, herons and black storks can be observed along the banks of the Torrente Fiumara.
The annual patron saint’s festival “Il rito di San Michele Arcangelo” takes place on September 29. The Lucania Outdoor Park in Loc. Acqua Furr is a forest adventure park with an aerial course among trees, platforms, walkways, Tibetan bridges and rope nets. The course also includes steel cables suspended up to 20 m above the ground.
