Sarnelli Between Roads, Water and History

Sarnelli is a district of Avigliano and brings together several clearly identifiable gateways to Basilicata: rural history, historic routes, railway structures and regional cuisine. The Via Herculia runs along a section from Sarnelli to Lagopesole. Near Sarnelli and at Castel Lagopesole railway station, it crosses one of the headwater branches of the Bradano.

A Rural Glimpse into the Past

In 1871, the Sarnelli estate covered approximately 658 tomoli. Nearby Castel Lagopesole was built between 1242 and 1250 as one of the residences in Basilicata desired by Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. The cultural perspective therefore extends from Sarnelli’s estate to the history of Basilicata under Frederick II. The castle thus belongs to the medieval history of Basilicata, while the estate, with its connection to 1871, belongs to a distinctly later period.

Church and Protected Railway Heritage

The Church of San Vincenzo Ferreri was built in Sarnelli in 1962. The church dates from the 20th century. The town is also home to the protected complex “Stazione Ferroviaria e Scalo Merci di Castel Lagopesole”. It comprises the station building, the railway keeper’s house and the goods warehouse. The local landscape therefore includes both a religious building and several components of a railway site. The protected complex bears the name Castel Lagopesole, although it is located in Sarnelli.

Routes with Different Meanings

Castel Lagopesole railway station opened in 1892 on the Foggia–Potenza railway line. This transport connection continues with the Via Herculia, whose section between Sarnelli and Lagopesole is interrupted in some places by State Road 658, the Potenza–Melfi route. For orientation, you should consider the route and the interruptions caused by the state road together. The Potenza–Melfi route refers to the road connection here, not to the Foggia–Potenza railway line in the area around Sarnelli.

Another transport route is the municipal road “Tratturo Varco di Lavello”, which leads from Sarnelli. Together with the Via Herculia, it broadens the spatial perspective on the town by adding another route designated as a municipal road.
