Terranova di Pollino Amid Trails and Landscapes
Terranova di Pollino combines trails in Pollino National Park with distinctive landforms, sacred art and local traditions. Several trail routes, remarkable natural features and historic buildings give you reason to consider nature and culture together when planning your trip.
Trail 980 in Pollino National Park runs from Rifugio Acquafredda to Timpa delle Murge through San Costantino Albanese and Terranova di Pollino. It is 4,490 metres long and classified E. Trail 931 runs from Madonna di Pollino to Serra di Crispo through San Severino Lucano, Fardella, Chiaromonte and Terranova di Pollino. It is 6,020 metres long and is also classified E.

Trails Through Pollino National Park
Trail 923 leads from Piano Toscano to Serra delle Ciavole in Terranova di Pollino. It is 6,134 metres long and classified EE. Trail 921 connects Monte Pollino, the Piani di Pollino and Piano Gaudolino and passes through Viggianello, Morano Calabro, Terranova di Pollino and Chiaromonte; it is 7,920 metres long and classified E.
The different lengths and classifications allow you to distinguish the four routes according to these two characteristics.
Rock, Forest and Water
Lago della Duglia lies at an altitude of 1,375 metres at the foot of Serra di Crispo and is surrounded by beech and silver fir forests. Timpa Falconara is an imposing rock face that dominates the valley landscape.
Timpa di Pietrasasso is a 1,362-metre-high serpentinite or ophiolitic rock spur that rises more than 50 metres. Timpa delle Murge reaches 1,441 metres and consists of basalt rock formed by magma emerging from the depths of the sea.
The Catusa spring is characterised by large boulders and enormous beech trees several centuries old. Terranova di Pollino therefore presents a variety of landscapes, from wooded water spots to distinctive rock spurs and high mountain peaks.
Culture and Orientation in the Town
Carnival is one of the typical traditions of Terranova di Pollino. Local associations began making instruments in the 1980s. Mario Salerno in Terranova di Pollino is available year-round for trekking, hiking, activities in winter landscapes and water tourism.
Terranova di Pollino is also home to Bar Caffetteria da Pietro, an authorised sales outlet for the official hiking-map cases “cuore del parco” and “monte alpi”. In this way, practical orientation remains connected to a specific place alongside the landscapes.
The Church of San Francesco di Paola preserves its original main portal made of Aleppo pine wood and houses a 16th-century painting by Attilio De Laurentis depicting the Madonna delle Grazie together with Saints Charles Borromeo and Francis of Assisi.
The Sanctuary of Madonna di Pietà dates from the 16th century, was rebuilt in the 20th century and later restored again. Palazzo Rusciani has a particularly beautiful interior staircase. Together with Carnival, instrument making and sacred art, this creates a multifaceted cultural picture of the town.
