Castello di Trecchina, linguistic island and local culture

Trecchina combines a historic town centre with cultural traditions. The ruins of the Castello di Trecchina still tower over the old town centre today. The castle was built in 1530 by the Palmieri barons from Latronico.

Trecchina is considered a Gallo-Italic linguistic island. Another distinctive feature of the local culture can be seen in the Carnival of Trecchina. It is characterised by the figure of the Cantacronze, a singer of traditional songs. These songs are accompanied by the cupa cupa, a typical regional musical instrument. The Carnival thus brings together a distinctive figure, traditional songs and a regionally named instrument.

Monte Pollino, Monte Santa Maria and religious traditions

Trecchina’s connection with the landscape includes the Parco delle Stelle. It is located on Monte Pollino at an altitude of 1,030 metres above sea level.

A centuries-old tradition is the Festa della Madonna del Perpetuo Soccorso. It begins on the last Sunday in May with a procession. During this procession, the statue of the Madonna is taken to the 1,099-metre-high Monte Santa Maria, where the Santuario is located. The combination of procession, mountain and sanctuary gives the festival a clearly religious character.

The Festa patronale di San Michele Arcangelo also includes a procession through Trecchina. It also passes through the lanes of the historic town centre. The two processions therefore differ in their routes: one leads to a Santuario on a mountain, while the other passes through the lanes of the town centre.

Pane di Trecchina, Sagra della Castagna and the local festival calendar

Pane di Trecchina is part of the local culinary identity. It is a baked product made from type 00 flour, water and sourdough.

This culinary focus is complemented by the Sagra della Castagna, which today extends across almost the entire month of October. This results in two clearly distinct festival periods when planning a trip to Trecchina: the start of the Madonna festival on the last Sunday in May and the long duration of the Sagra in October.

Another ancient site in this surrounding area is Colla.
